Died from the wounds he sustained two years earlier when, about 4.25pm on 31st May 1922, he and Constable Andrew Roulston were ambushed and shot at point-blank range by two terrorist gunmen as they patrolled their beat in Millfield, Belfast, near the corner of Peter’s Hill. Constable Roulston died on the day of the attack.
