UK Police Memorial

The UK Police Memorial stands at the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire — the Nation’s Year-Round Place of Remembrance - and welcomes over 300,000 visitors annually, including many school parties.

Crafted from elegant, perforated bronze and stone, and standing 12 metres high, the structure is both contemporary and timeless, symbolising strength, resilience, and sacrifice. It represents a place for remembrance and reflection, reinforcing the memorial’s solemn and contemplative nature.

As people approach the Memorial, they pass through a wildflower meadow along a pathway edged with descriptive text and the distinctive Sillitoe Tartan—symbolic of policing. The Memorial gradually reveals itself, and visitors are greeted by a tall open doorway supporting a brass screen, representing a threshold that officers pass through towards danger, but from which some never return.

Leaf-shaped gilt-edged apertures cut into the screen symbolise absence and loss. As the sun passes through them, the paved surface below is illuminated by this gilded absence. An open lawn, with occasional bench seating and a leaf-shaped stage, provides a space for ceremonies and quiet reflection. Encircling the Memorial, a simple yet striking ring of trees creates a sense of protection and enclosure, reflecting the role of the police service in protecting communities across the United Kingdom.

Dedication of the UK Police Memorial 2021

The UK Police Memorial at the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire was dedicated on 28th July 2021, in the presence of His Majesty The King (then HRH The Prince of Wales), the then Prime Minister, Home Secretary, families of the fallen, senior policing leaders, representatives from policing charities, as well as donors and sponsors who helped make the Memorial a reality.

Thanks to the efforts of a dedicated team of volunteers, the memorial stands as a lasting place of remembrance.

Welsh Police Memorial – Cofeb Heddlu Cymru

Work to establish a Welsh Police Memorial has been ongoing since 2013. It was agreed early on that the memorial will stand in Cardiff, and the Police Remembrance Trust continues to work closely with Cardiff City Council to bring this to fruition.

A winning design of the memorial has been chosen from the University of Wales Trinity St David, Swansea, and the team behind it are working with local Welsh architect, Benjamin Hales.

Our hope to see a place in the city’s capital to commemorate Welsh police officers lost in service is firmly within reach.
