Fatally shot alongside a colleague when they were ambushed by terrorists while on foot patrol in Port Rush, County Antrim.
Police Memorial Tribute
Nearing midnight the Main Street in Portrush was busy with late night revellers as Reserve Constables McLean and Frederick Verner Armstrong patrolled their beat. Two gunmen approached them from behind and shot both officers in the head and back at close range, killing them instantly.
Robert was stationed at Portrush Police Station and was married with a son and a daughter.
