Shot and fatally wounded while attempting to arrest a gang of armed burglars that he and two colleagues had disturbed late the previous night at the Exchange Buildings, Cutler Street, Houndsditch.
Police Memorial Tribute
This incident was the precursor to what became the Siege of Sidney Street.
PC Walter Charles Choat also died on this date while PS Charles Tucker died the previous day.
All three officers were posthumously awarded the King’s Police Medal for Gallantry.
