Killed when he was struck from behind by a bus that he'd indicated to stop while directing traffic at Ludgate Circus.
Police Memorial Tribute
A passenger stated that the bus was only four yards from PC Smith when the officer held up his hand for the bus to stop. But, in poor weather and on a greasy road, the bus was unable to stop and skidded into and then over John who, by then, had turned his back.
PC Smith had served for thirteen years and leaves a wife and two young children.
