Inspector Mills died in hospital the day after he was struck a single blow with a hurling stick at an illegal protest meeting outside the burnt-out remains of Liberty Hall in Beresford Place, Dublin, when sections of a large crowd tried to free the two leaders he had arrested and was escorting to nearby Store Street Police Station.
