Fatally shot, together with Constable Edward Doran, who died two days later in Birr Military Barracks, after their cycle patrol, which had been serving summonses, was ambushed in the village of Kinnitty about seven miles from Birr, County Offaly. The patrol had passed through the village earlier that day and the gunmen laid in wait knowing that the patrol would return by the same route. Two other officers were wounded in the attack.
