Died almost instantly after being shot through the neck when his cycle patrol of 14 men came under heavy, prolonged gunfire at Kilmilkin in the Maam Valley, County Galway, as they prepared to raid the house of a known terrorist. Posthumously awarded the Constabulary Medal for Gallantry.
