Police Memorial Tribute
Died in the General Hospital four hours after being struck on the temple with a brick and knocked unconscious.
Earlier, as an officer with C Division, he had been sent to a public house in Bridge Street West to deal with a disturbance at closing time. On arrival, he and a colleague tried to break up the trouble and arrested a couple of men for being drunk and disorderly. As the officers walked away, a crowd that had gathered turned on them. At first the officers faced a barrage of stones, but the drunken mob became more violent, punching and kicking the constables in an attempt to free their friends.
