Died from complications after sustaining severe injuries when he was stabbed in the stomach while making an arrest nearly eleven years earlier, in January 1985.
While en route back to Peckham Police Station he stepped into a shop that had just been robbed but was stabbed as he tackled the male perpetrator. After five months in a coma PC Hammond returned to light duties but never fully recovered from his injuries and retired in 1990.
