Roll of Honour Citation
Shot and killed while attempting to arrest a gang of armed burglars that he and two colleagues had disturbed late at night at the Exchange Buildings, Cutler Street, Houndsditch.
Police Memorial Tribute
This incident was the precursor to what became the Siege of Sidney Street.
PS Robert Bentley and PC Walter Charles Choat both died the following day.
All three officers were posthumously awarded the King’s Police Medal for Gallantry.
