Shot dead when he was ambushed by gunmen at the gates of Ballyturin House, County Galway.

His wife and two British Soldiers were also killed in the same incident.
About 8.30pm, the party was returning to Ballyturin House after a game of tennis. As they approached the gates of the house they were ambushed by a party of gunmen. Of the five people in the car, the only survivor described how up to twenty men surrounded the vehicle and poured bullets into the victims.
